Taiwan's supply chain said that the price of USB Type-C chips will fall by more than 20% in 2019.
According to Taiwan's DIGITIMES report, local chip makers expect that the price of USB Type-C (also known as USB-C) related chips will fall by more than 20% in 2019. This also indicates that there will be more devices using USB Type-C, and USB Type-C is expected to become a unified solution for mobile device interfaces.
At present, most Android smartphone manufacturers have been replaced with USB Type-C interfaces. Apple's charging devices can also see USB Type-C. The newly launched iPad Pro uses USB Type-C interface directly.
Recently, Weideng Power, Xiangshuo, Yuchuang, Angbao and Lijun have all begun to upgrade the cost structure of the new generation of USB Type-C related chip solutions. Tianyi, Tongjia and Genesis are also actively introducing USB Type- C related chip samples.
According to reports, Taiwanese manufacturers are increasingly investing in USB Type-C PD (Power Delivery) and control chips, and their production capacity is increasing. This year, USB Type-C related chip orders have increased in size, and USB Type-C will be widely used in external hard drives, smart speakers and smart small household appliances in the future.
Chip suppliers including ASMedia Technology, Etron Technology, Weltrend Semiconductor, On-Bright Electronics and Richtek Technology have seen their orders for Type-C chip solutions from PC and notebook vendors in 2018 double those in 2017.
These chipmakers are all developing new-generation solutions integrating both controller and PD chips to provide one-stop shopping services for customers. In addition, many other peers including Fitipower Integrated Technology, Leadtrend Technology and Genesys Logic are also aggressively rolling out sample solutions for customer validations.
But growing supply is expected to result in price fall, industry sources commented.
In addition, terminal vendors are now not so eager to stockpile chip inventories, as foundry service tight supply is easing. Instead they are keen to conduct price negotiations with chipmakers, further posing downward pressure on average chip prices for 2019, the sources added.
