Customer Questions & Answers

QuestionDoes anyone use the 5v port in the back?

AnswerMost non-self-powered USB devices can power themselves from the lower amperage provided by the PC over USB. The more ports on the hub (with active devices), the more power is needed from the source (the PC or the wall plug).
Devices will begin to struggle if there are lots of devices plugged in, or any high-power drawing devices if the hub isn't powered by a good power supply. I think most PC USB ports put out 0.5 amps, or 1amp for the charging ports on newer machines. That gets distributed 4-ways with this 4-port hub, so if you have 4 devices pulling the power evenly, they would receive 0.125 (or 0.25) amps each. I think about 0.5 amps is what certain higher-end devices would require, like 1080p webcams and stuff. Typically mice and keyboards would be far less.
Not all hubs give you the option to plug in a dedicated 5V plug. Many of the "powered" hubs, will also work without the plug, too, for smaller devices. This is nice because they sell it as a non-powered hub (which is typically less expensive) but you have the option to power it if you need it, without buying a new one. I can't tell from the pics what the plug is, but 5V is likely a micro USB plug, like you use for your phone. So you are likely to have one lying around already. The Samsung Galaxy S6 charger is a 2amp charger which should be more than enough for 4 devices.

Question: I have a Surface Pro. When docked on the keyboard, the USB port is on the right-hand upper side. Is the cord long enough so it won't be dangling? Thx.

Answer: I do not have a Surface Pro. However, the cord is approx. 62cm (24.5 inches or ~2 ft) long. Hope that helps.

Question: Does the main hub require the charger to work or just work better? Required for Charging port?

Answer: The power adapter is optional. For faster charging and hard drive connection, you may need one power adapter.

Customer Feedback

"Seems well built. I'm supporting two Thrustmaster MFD I/O devices for my game (Falcon BMS) off of this hub/splitter and it works great. Also, have an HP Desk Jet printer hanging off of this too, and all three items work fine. I like the lights combined with the ability to selectively put each port 'on" or 'off". It's not a plug-it-in-and-all-ports-are-stuck-" on" thing. You can decide to turn on/off individual ports. I imagine this would help with power and data signal flow. The cord length is sufficient. I wasn't planning on running it far from the back of my computer anyway, so cord length is not an issue for me. If anything, since I wanted to leave it on the back of my computer (the other devices' cords themselves reach the computer, and I only wanted more ports) the long cord is a small annoyance to me ( I had to accordion fold the cord and zip tie it to make neat cable management). I would prefer if they market two versions of this device - a stubby cord a few inches long and a long cord say 6-8 feet - and let us choose which. But I'm just nitpicking here, this product is awesome and is 3.0 standard (or at least it's colored blue, I have to trust, I have no special equipment to test it). Great device, I recommend."

"I use my laptop computer as my desktop when I'm at home. I generally have some USB headphones, a USB external SSD drive, and (Always) a USB Wi-Fi dongle, which I use at home, but do not go with me when I travel. This hub makes this easy by creating a single connection to unplug when it's time to leave, and everything is waiting for me when I return home. I love the individual power buttons, because I can turn off a device I'm not using, without unplugging it, which saves wear and tear on my USB connections. For example, I only turn on my SSD drive once a week, to back up my data files, then I turn it off again. Should I get hacked, that copy of my files can't be "ransomed" or accessed. After having mine for about 6 months, I bought a second one for my wife, and we are both very happy with them. If I HAD to name a negative issue, it's that the blue LEDs that illuminate the sockets when turned on, are bright. Since both hubs are in my bedroom, the whole room has a blue glow at night."

"so far so good and my ramble as to why I picked this one. I like the design - good enough percentage of good reviews. Now that I have it - I like the power buttons for each port and port spacing is perfect in my option; The light comes on for individual ports when there is power to that port. I grew tired of swapping things back and forth on the back of my desktop (all in one) (why don't they make more ports and put them in the FRONT of a computer?) I generally need a couple extra ports so I finally got this 4 port USB hub. Anyway - good price and I have a functional device. I'm sure if anyone were to get a faulty item - amazon and its sellers are always ready to assist in correcting it. That has always been my experience. I give this 5 stars and I like it. Not that it's important but now that it sits on the desk - I like the blue lights too. Nice."

"I bought this so I can set it up in my office at work to give me extra ports to my laptop. I am super satisfied with this USB hub. No external power source is needed yet though it is great that there is a port available (the external power cord is not included in this).

Here is my setup:
1. Wired Dell mouse
2. Wired Dell keyboard
3. 8 TB Seagate external hard drive (that has its power source)
4. empty

I was most worried that the external hard drive would put too much strain on the USB hub, but I have had no issues connecting and sending files between the USB hub and the external hard drive. I think it helped that the external hard drive has its power source. It's also great that I can turn off each USB port individually, so I can shut off the hard drive when I am not using it.

I am very satisfied with this purchase and would recommend it."
